Overview
The space
Just two blocks from the historic central square in San Miguel de Allende, with its 17th and 18th-century buildings and churches, folk-art filled shops, and sophisticated restaurants and cafes, Casa Tres Cervezas feels a world apart from the hustle and bustle of town.
Hand-cut Mexican metal and glass lighting with a Moroccan flair throw romantic sparks of light and shadow onto the arched corridors and ceilings in a magical display of pattern and brilliance. Cantera stone walls and columns throughout the property have been hand carved and sculpted in intricate designs by Mexican craftsmen whose families have passed their skills on for generations. Domed brick ceilings called bovedas (a local specialty and a dying art), architectural art glass by internationally renowned artists, forged iron gates and railings, custom crafted wooden furniture, carved fireplaces (six of them!), and colorful concrete and ceramic Mexican tile have all been artistically incorporated into the home with striking results.
There are numerous large, inviting gathering places, as well as smaller, intimate seating areas that offer a quiet escape. Central to the home is a large, stone walled gourmet kitchen equipped with a commercial gas stove and top-of-the-line appliances. The kitchen can comfortably seat 8-12 for family-style meals. A chef who specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine, but with a modern twist, comes with the property – head out to the “lanai” courtyard across from the kitchen with a plate of her huevos rancheros and relax in the lavish shaded gardens while you breakfast.
Truly unique, private luxury compound in one of the most beautiful, historic cities in the world.
Another kitchen with a bar and a grill is upstairs on the rooftop terrace, and it’s the perfect place to retreat around sunset with a drink. Gaze out across the koi pond and fountain to watch the sunset against the rooftops of this 500-year-old colonial city – your view of the sky is dominated by the fanciful spires of San Miguel’s La Parroquia cathedral that soar above the other churches, domes, and rooftops terraces against a distant backdrop of mountain peaks.
The dining and adjacent living room with its stone walls, boveda ceiling and floor to ceiling windows looking out at the courtyard is elegantly and comfortably furnished. At 6,500 feet, San Miguel has near perfect weather, but on a cool evening light the fireplace and dine in its warm glow while a spectacular Ula Darni chandelier casts a rainbow of color overhead. A small downstairs media theater is below the living/dining room.
The estate’s swimming pool and spa are in their own garden courtyard enclosed by soaring stone walls carved out of the local cantera stone and sculpted with a relief of vines and flowers. A spacious exercise room for yoga, complete with a Yoga Wall opens out onto the pool courtyard. Relax in a chaise lounge on the patio, cool off in the pool, or stretch and work out in the yoga room. Private massage can be arranged in the yoga room with the great massage therapists.
